A boon for nature lovers, the Klein Karoo, is surrounded by mountain ranges that protect this seemingly barren inland valley with its diverse succulent species, monumental cave systems and ancient San and Khoi heritage. Most notable in this region, however, is the charming town of Outdshoorn, the hub of South Africa’s ostrich meat, feather and skin trade.

Fluff your feathers and strut your stuff in the quaint Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, the world’s “ostrich capital”. Learn how these quizzical birds are reared and see the crafts created from their feathers and skin. See the 20-million-year-old natural cave wonder of the Cango Caves at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains – meandering along 1.2km to see Cleopatra’s Needle, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Madonna and Child, among other subterranean features.
Trace Route 62, past quaint villages and towns from Outdshoorn in the Klein Karoo to Langkloof near the small village of Herold, exploring the crafts, heritage and most of all, the traditional cuisine of this diverse region. Enjoy tasty cheeses in Ladismith, Port in Calitzdorp and the flavours of ostrich bredie (stew) in Oudtshoorn – there’s something for every taste.
Indulge in the fruit basket that is Barrydale with its abundant orchards stretching across the valley, from apricots to peaches, figs to grapes. Stop in at Ronnie’s Sex Shop for a beer and some local hospitality, and ramble through the town’s Heritage Gardens with its beautiful collection of aloes, endemic to the area.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Extraordinary in its ancient landscapes and heritage, the semi-desert region of the Klein Karoo and its treasures take centre stage on this trip, which will see guests traverse the spectacular Sir Lowry’s Pass en route to the Dutch-inspired town of Swellendam. We cross Tradouwpass and visit the beautiful little Karoo village of Barrydale before continuing along South Africa’s very-own Route 62 to the picturesque town Montagu (known for its fruits and nuts production) and across the breathtaking Kogmanskloof Mountain Pass to Robertson en route back to Cape Town.
